- Domain Name Service (DNS) is used to point a domain name to its IP Address, which is the physical location of a website. Each domain name has a zone in DNS that contains records. The records point each form of the domain name to its corresponding host name or IP address.
For example:
DNS Zone: domainname.com
Record: www -> domainname.com
Record: domainname.com -> 123.45.67.001
Record: mail -> mail.ondemandhosting.net
The DNS zones are stored on a name server. - Question:
- How does a name server work?
- Answer:
- When a domain name is entered into a Web browser, a name server looks through its records for that domain name and then points the browser to the server that contains the requested website.

- How do I change the name servers?
- Answer:
- You must contact your registrar. Your registrar is the company that registered the domain name for you. If OnDemand Hosting registered the domain name for you, then the name servers have already been setup correctly. If you are not sure who your registrar is, you may do a "whois" search for your domain name, or contact your old hosting company. Some hosting companies are resellers for a domain registrar.
